Electrified vehicles present the dual benefits of lowering CO2 emissions and decreasing consumption of non-sustainable energies (carbon-based fuels). Using GaN devices in cars can further enhance these benefits by enabling a 10% increase in fuel efficiency.
The automotive industry also needs ways to make more efficient use of the electrical energy stored in cars by reducing electrical-conversion losses. GaN devices’ low ohmic and switching losses combined with high-frequency operation lead to lower system cost, weight and size for DC-DC and onboard chargers. In addition, the size of GaN-based inverters in electric vehicles can be reduced by half while boosting their efficiency by 25%.
