Growing demand for data-storage capacity has spurred an expanding need for data centers, which can require four megawatts or more of electrical power and raise associated thermal-cooling challenges. GaN technology enables a data center’s server power supplies to be made smaller, which increases data-storage density. By applying GaN at the power factor conversion (PFC) level, a data center’s overall energy consumption can be reduced by 3%, representing a potential saving of several million dollars per data center (CF-1000 racks).
